Taking an Express Bus in Korea: Booking, Terminals and Boarding

Book a Korean express or intercity bus, find the right terminal, check your ticket and seat, plan luggage and rest stops, and understand seller-specific cancellations.

Book on the right platform for your bus type, and match the exact departure and arrival terminals. Arrive early enough to find your platform, and be at the bus a few minutes before departure. If you've already compared options in our KTX vs express bus guide and chosen the bus, this is how the trip works in practice.

Express or intercity: know which network you need

For this trip, distinguish express buses from intercity buses. Express buses (고속버스, gosok beoseu, "express bus") and intercity buses (시외버스, sioe beoseu, "intercity bus") are booked through different systems. A current Korea Tourism Organization bus travel guide points to KOBUS for express routes. For intercity routes it lists Txbus and Bustago. It also mentions Klook and GoHanpass as options for foreign visitors. If a booking site is unavailable, check another channel listed by KTO. A separate KTO booking page lists Klook for express buses and GoHanpass for intercity buses. Whether a given foreign card works depends on the platform and your card. Try an alternative before giving up. If your card is refused, see what to do when a foreign card is declined.

Match the terminal names exactly

Searching by city name alone is risky. Many cities have more than one bus terminal. Seoul has several, including Dong Seoul (동서울, Dong Seoul) and Seoul Nambu (서울남부, Seoul Nambu), and they serve different routes. They are not interchangeable.

Copy the Korean terminal name from your booking, then find its full address in a map app before your travel day. Our map app comparison explains how to check a Korean destination. Do the same for your arrival terminal so you know where you'll end up.

Before you pay

Run through this checklist on the booking screen:

  • Seat class: choose what's displayed and read its description. Don't count on extras like USB ports, legroom or snacks unless the listing names them.

  • Fare: check the fare shown by your chosen provider. Prices and fees vary by seller, so there's no single universal price.

  • Cancellation terms: note the cancellation deadline, the time zone it uses and the refund terms before paying.

  • Where to cancel: cancel through the provider you bought from. A terminal counter may not be able to refund a third-party booking.

  • Large items: if you're bringing a bicycle or oversize luggage, ask about the policy before you pay.

Your ticket on travel day

The main KTO guide says you can buy tickets online, at the counter or from a kiosk. Depending on the provider, you may need to print or exchange your ticket at the terminal, so read your confirmation carefully. Tapping a T-money card isn't the same as holding a reserved seat. Follow the ticketing instructions for your reserved service before boarding.

At the terminal, look up your bus on the departure screens to find the platform number. KTO advises boarding about 5 to 10 minutes before departure. Get there earlier than that if the terminal is new to you.

Luggage, rest stops and comfort

Ask the driver where to put a large bag; coaches commonly have a luggage hold beneath the passenger cabin. Put a name tag on yours and keep valuables, passports and medication with you in your seat.

Longer routes may stop at a rest area, but not every route does. Don't assume there's a toilet on board. Use the restroom before you board and ask the driver how long any stop will last. Bring water, a snack and a warm layer, because cabin temperatures vary.

If plans change

When booking a return trip, allow for traffic, especially on weekends and holidays. Leave a buffer between your arrival and any onward trains, flights or check-ins. If you miss your bus, contact the seller you booked with. Don't expect a free automatic change.

Frequently asked questions

›Can I book Korean express buses from abroad?

Often, yes. KTO lists Klook and GoHanpass for foreign visitors, alongside the Korean platforms. If a booking site is unavailable, try another listed channel.

›Can I just tap my T-money card to ride?

Not as a substitute for a reserved ticket. Book a seat and follow your provider's instructions for collecting or showing the ticket.

›How early should I arrive at the terminal?

KTO suggests boarding 5 to 10 minutes before departure. Add extra time to find the platform, and more if you need to print or exchange a ticket.
