Booking KTX Trains: Routes, Prices and Seat Tips

Korea's KTX (Korea Train eXpress) turns Seoul-to-Busan into a comfortable 2-and-a-bit-hour ride at up to 300 km/h — no security line, no baggage fees, and a seat you can actually work in. Booking is genuinely easy in English once you know which app to use, and 2026 brought a big change: SRT and KTX are now one system.

Before you start

A few things to know before you book:

• One app now. Since September 1, 2026, SRT merged into KTX and the two old apps (KORAIL Talk and the SRT app) became a single KORAIL+ app. Book everything there or on the official English site.
• Book early for weekends and holidays. Popular Seoul–Busan trains and any travel around Chuseok or Lunar New Year sell out. Weekday off-peak seats are usually available same-day.
• Know your Seoul station. Most KTX trains leave from Seoul Station (서울역); some also stop at Yongsan (용산). Former SRT trains mainly leave from Suseo (수서) in the south of the city. Check which station your train uses — they are far apart.

What you need

• A passport or ID for the booking name (not checked on board for domestic trips, but keep your ticket).
• An international credit card — KORAIL+ and korail.com/global accept foreign cards.
• Your phone, to hold the QR e-ticket. No printing required.
• Optional: a Korea Rail Pass (KR Pass) if you plan several long trips in a few days — it can beat buying point-to-point tickets. Worth doing the math for a multi-city trip.

Step-by-step

1. Open KORAIL+ or go to korail.com/global. Set the language to English.
2. Enter your trip. Departure station, arrival station, date and number of passengers.
3. Pick a train. The results list shows departure time, duration and price. Fewer-stop trains are faster; check the arrival time, not just the departure.
4. Choose class and seat. Select Standard (일반실) or First Class (특실), then use the seat map to pick window or aisle and, importantly, travel direction — you can choose a forward-facing seat.
5. Pay. Enter your card details. You'll get a booking confirmation and a QR e-ticket in the app.
6. Board. Arrive 10–15 minutes early, find your car and seat numbers on the platform signs, and just walk on — there is no gate scan or security. Conductors may check the QR on board.

What it costs

Fares are distance-based and fixed (no surge pricing). Reference prices for the flagship route:

• Seoul → Busan, standard class: about ₩59,800 one way.
• Seoul → Busan, first class (특실): about ₩83,700 — roughly 40% more, with wider 2-plus-1 seating and lounge access at major stations.
• Shorter hops cost proportionally less: Seoul → Daejeon or Seoul → Dongdaegu are cheaper.
• A 10% fare cut on existing KTX routes is being phased in over three years following the 2026 merger, so expect prices to ease slightly.

Common problems (and fixes)

• My foreign card is declined. Use the KORAIL+ app or korail.com/global (the English channels are built for foreign cards); if it still fails, buy at a station ticket machine or staffed counter, which accept most cards.
• The train sold out. Try a nearby departure time, a train with one more stop, or first class — it often has seats left when standard is full. Same-day standing-room tickets exist on some routes.
• I booked from the wrong station. Seoul, Yongsan and Suseo are all separate stations across the city. Double-check the departure station before you pay, and give yourself time to reach it.
• Refunds and changes. You can cancel or change through the app; refund fees rise the closer you get to departure, so change plans early. Cancelling well ahead is usually free or near-free.

Good to know

• Luggage is easy. Standard rolling suitcases fit the overhead racks; oversized bags go in the luggage shelves at the ends of each car. There are no weight fees or check-in — just carry it on.
• Seats have power. Outlets sit near the window seats, so a window seat is best if you want to charge a laptop. First class has 2-plus-1 seating and a bit more room.
• Facilities. Trains have restrooms, a snack vending area on many services, and quiet, smooth Wi-Fi-friendly cars. First class adds free lounge access at stations like Seoul, Busan, Daejeon and Dongdaegu.
